Some Observations on the Birth Weight of Beef Cattle

چکیده

Birth weights of 1908 purebred Herefords, Shorthorns, Brahmans and Africanders, and Fl and F2 generation Africander cross, Brahman cross and British cross calves, collected from 1954 to 1962, were analysed. Heterosis in the Fl was estimated as 13% for Brahman cross, 5% for Africander cross, and 3% for British cross. The mean birth weights of the F2 Zebu cross were less than those of the Fl, while in the British cross the reverse applied. In the Brahman cross, large sex differences appeared in the Fl, whereas no sex difference was found in the F2 generation.

Costs and Benefits of Beef Cattle Fattening Schemes in some Selected Areas of North West Tanzania

This study highlights the costs and benefits of indigenous beef cattle fattening schemes in Shinyanga Urban and Kishapu Districts in Tanzania. Specifically, in this study the net profit (NP) for fatteners between beef cattle fattening schemes has been determined. The schemes were divided into two main categories, scheme 1 in which the animals were fed on cottonseed hulls (CSHL) based diets and ...

Age-of-dam adjustment factors for birth and weaning weight records of beef cattle: a review.

Age-of-dam adjustment factors are used to preadjust birth and weaning weight data for national beef cattle genetic evaluations. Adjustments are used in order to make the means of the different age-of-dam subclasses similar so that a fair comparison of animals can be performed. A review was made of various research studies that have estimated age-of-dam adjustment factors for birth weight and we...

Genetic (co)variances among birth weight, 200-day weight, and postweaning gain in composites and parental breeds of beef cattle.

Genetic and environmental (co)variances for birth weight, adjusted 200-d weight, and postweaning gain were estimated in nine parental and three composite populations of beef cattle. The parental breeds were Angus (A), Braunvieh (B), Charolais (C), Gelbvieh (G), Hereford (H), Limousin (L), Pinzgauer (P), Red Poll (R), and Simmental (S). The composites were MARC I (1/4 B, 1/4 C, 1/4 L, 1/8 H, 1/8...

Genetic correlation of longevity with growth, post-mortem, docility and some morphological traits in the Pirenaica beef cattle breed.

Survival or longevity is an economically relevant trait in cattle. However, it is not currently included in cattle selection criteria because of the delayed recording of phenotypic data and the high computational demand of survival techniques under proportional hazard models. The identification of longevity-correlated traits that can be early registered in lifetime would therefore be very usefu...
